1949 SEMESTRAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES IN
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

Left Manila, Philippines, January 18, 1949 on board the SS China Victory.

Arrived San Francisco, California, USA February 3, 1949 and landed to the U.S. Immigration Detention Quarter for failure to have an X-ray and Blood Test Examination in the Philippines.

February 4, 1949 left the Immigration Quarter through the help and intervention of Consul Pidlaon of the Philippine Consulate Office in San Francisco and booked at the Hotel Plaza in California up to the 6th.

February 8, 1949 left San Francisco, California for Los Angeles on board the day-light train, arriving at destination in the evening. Met at the station by a colleague through the instruction of Dr. I. McCulloch of the Foundation. Booked at the Coliseum Hotel until the following day.

February 9, 1949 left the Coliseum Hotel and transferred to a private boarding room arranged for him by his Boss. Reporting to Dr. Irene McCulloch at the Allan Hancock Foundation. Registered at the Graduate School, University of Southern California in two graduate courses with 8 units namely Zoology 208bL Marine Research and Zoology 210bL Special Problems in Zoology. Limited to 8 units due to status as member of the Research Staff of the Foundation with compensation of $100.00 monthly.

February 10, 1949 started work at the Foundation. Looked over for necessary references. Given some materials to work out from the Newport Bay, along the coast.

February 11, 1949 went to the Velero IV, the floating marine laboratory of the Allan Hancock Foundation at the Terminal Island with Dr. McCulloch. Met Captain Hancock and Fred Siesenhenne. Proceeded to San Pedro for field work to join some graduate students who were doing some collections and studying the marine fauna of the place. Dropped at the San Pedro Marine Museum to see different collections of marine fauna including birds, etc. mostly mounted.

In the evening was invited to the scientific meeting of the Los Angeles Aquarium Society and was introduced by the President to the Society. He was asked to give them a talk some other day.

February 13, 1949 (Sunday) went for field work with Dr. McCulloch and some other graduate students to the coast towards Sta. Barbara to study the marine fauna of the place and for collections of materials.

February 15, 1949 attended the Zoology Club meeting in the afternoon. Was made a member of the Club. Dr. G.E. MacGinitie of Kerkerff Marine Station gave an illustrated lecture on the food and feeding habit of marine animals.

February 17, 1949. Dr. Howard Hill, Zoologist and curator of the Los Angeles County Museum took him to the Museum and showed him most of the marine collections. Gave him a whole year Pass to the Museum anytime of the day. He invited him to join one of his field trips along the coast with some of the members of the Shells Club. He gave him all the facilities to use the collections of the Museum in connection with his research work at the Foundation.

February 18, 1949. Had a conference with Dr. Clementz, Chairman of the Hancock Research Staff. Advised him to request for an extension of his official detail so that he can be a candidate for the P.h. D. degree.

February 21, 1949. Moved to the third floor of the Foundation where he was assigned his exclusive laboratory with all the facilities needed.

February 23, 1949. Started his scientific research work on the Holothurioidea of the Eastern Pacific in the collection of the Allan Hancock Foundation collected by the Velero IV from 1938 to the time he was at the foundation.

February 24, 1949. Interviewed Dr. Phil M. Roedel, Aquatic Biologist of the Bureau of Marine Fisheries, California State Fisheries Laboratory at the Terminal Island in connection with his proposed observation study of the fisheries along the Pacific Coast. He took the opportunity of checking up the fishes he worked out at the Hancock Foundation with their official record and publications. It is gratifying to note that in spite of the limited references he used and his meager knowledge of the American species of fishes, he got them all correctly identified.

February 27, 1949 (Sunday). Invited to a reception given by the Delta Phi Epsilon Fraternity in honor of all foreign students attending the University of Southern California. Was made to represent the Philippines in a picture taking by an official photographer of the University.

March 1, 1949. The University Health Department conducted a thorough examination of his blood for diabetes. Fortunately the result revealed that he was not diabetic although he may be a potential one.

March 12, 1949. Had a field work at Palos Verde Point with Dr. McCulloch and some other graduate students.

March 14, 1949. Had another field work at the U.S. Naval Reservation in San Pedro with Dr. McCulloch and other graduate students.

March 23, 1949. Went to San Pedro to Berth 187 to clear out and get some zoological materials from the Philippines.

March 27, 1949 (Sunday). Joined an excursion to the Griffith Park by the Intercultural Club of the University of Southern California.

March 30, 1949. Consulted Dr. Weeks, eye specialist of the University Health Department about his eyes.

April 1, 1949. Received Dr. Howard Hill, Zoologist and Curator of the LA County Museum and Dr. Alvin Seale, former Director of the Bureau of Science, Manila and the Steinhard Aquarium at San Francisco who called on him at his laboratory at the Foundation.

April 8, 1949. Attended a Round Table Conference at the Hancock Foundation Lecture Room. Gave an illustrated lecture on the Culture of Philippine Fishes to the Los Angeles Aquarium Society.

April 9, 1949. Joined Dr. Hill of the LA County Museum and his Shells Club members to a field work at Fermint and Abalone Points in San Pedro.

Attended an illustrated lecture of Dr. Roberts on the development of Butterfly at Dr. McCulloch's residence. (Illustrated with color film)

April 12, 1949. Attended an illustrated lecture of Dr. Hobb on Aquatic Mammals at the Hancock Auditorium. Dr. Garth showed a moving picture of the Sea Lions of Southern California.

May 1, 1949. Joined the University of Southern California Trojan Excursion to Avalon City, Sta. Catalina Island. Observed the fisheries of the place.

May 16, 1949. Received Dr. Joe Goodman, former Chemist and Oceanographer of the U.S. Fishery Program in the Philippines who is now the Chief Chemist of the Brentwood Hospital who called on him at his laboratory at the Foundation.

May 17, 1949. Guest of Dr. Howard Hill at a Luncheon at the University of Southern California.

May 19, 1949. Guest of Dr. Irene McCulloch at the Sigma XI Scientific Meeting and Reception in honor of the new initiated members.

Nominated to full membership of the Sigma XI by three outstanding members of the Society namely Dr. McCulloch, Dr. Osborne and Dr. Howard Hill.

May 27, 1949. Attended an illustrated lecture of Professor Karl Von Frisch of the University of Graz, Austria on the Language of the Bees at the Hancock Foundation Lecture Room.

June 2, 1949. Attended an illustrated lecture of a novel prize Winner from Copenhagen, Denmark on Vitamins at the Hancock Foundation Lecture Room.

June 4, 1949. End of the First Semester Session at the University of Southern California.

June 6, 1949. Interviewed Dean Bogardus of the Graduate School regarding the possibility of taking up the lacking units at the Philippines. Advised him to petition the Graduate Council through him.

Interviewed Dr. Martin, Head of Zoology Department as per advice of Dr. McCulloch.

June 7, 1949. Submitted his petition to the Graduate School Council to his adviser Dr. McCulloch.

June 11, 1949. Commencement Exercise of the University of Southern California at the Alumni Park, University Campus.
